Conventional wisdom dictates that the down side of
being in a cover band is the performers have to
leave their own creativity behind, since they’re
playing other people’s songs.
But that’s not entirely true for Nine Mile Creek. The
central New York band puts its set lists together from
a hefty list of classic rock legends – Eric Clapton,
Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Ted Nugent, Jimi
Hendrix and more.
But in between the memorable riffs, verses and
choruses of the platinum hits, members of Nine Mile
Creek sneak in their own personality with new riffs,
beats and solos.
“That’s the beautiful thing about music. That’s what
keeps it fresh,” said Sean Kelly, singer and guitarist
for the band. “If you want to hear a jukebox, you can
play the song on a juke box.”
Nine Mile Creek will play Friday night at the
Colonial Inn in Meridian. The band has been
playing around central New York for between five
and six years, Kelly said during a break from band
rehearsal.
A sagging economy has meant shows are fewer and
further between than previous years for bands like
his, Kelly said. Because of that, regulars to Nine
Mile Creek shows might notice some new songs on
the repertoire.
Kelly said they’ve added a few modern country
songs to its sets to appeal to different crowds.
“You’ve got to make the crowd happy or the bars don’
t want to hire you,” he said.
Though just because a song isn’t on a set list doesn’t
mean the band won’t play it. Kelly said the band
tries to accommodate requests, and he said Nine
Mile Creek looks at the list like a commander would
look at a battle plan.
“Once the war starts, you’ve got to change it
around,” Kelly said.
